Buck Rock Fire Lookout

      Buck Rock Lookout is located South of Hume Lake in the Big Meadows Area and is the Northern most lookout on the Sequoia National Forest, Hume Lake Ranger District, Township 14 S, Range 29 E, Section 6, at an elevation of 8,502 feet. It is also the oldest standing lookout in the forest, the current cab built in 1923.

      Buck Rock was established as a key fire detection location circa 1912 and due to its historic significance, has been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. Buck Rock is strategically perched on top of a granite dome overlooking most of the Hume Lake District, Kings Canyon National Park and Sequoia National Park. Because of its location and easy access, thousands of visitors from all over the world visit and enjoy the views, making it one of the most popular sites to visit within the Giant Sequoia National Monument. The High Sierra Trail Crew volunteers spent two days rehabilitating portions of the road and trail into Buck Rock Lookout. They also scraped and painted two storage outbuildings located at the base of the lookout.
